Classroom Activity: ELT
"Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice."
(Anton Chekhov)
Yes very true, If we didn't put in practice whatever we have learned the value of our knowledge became zero. You need to put what you learn into practice and do it over and over again until it's a habit. Practice makes our brains and muscles habituated to think in a way in whatever way you want. But to put in Practice is the hardest part of learning.
We are studying ELT paper in M.A. Part 2 where we are studying how to teach English as a Second Language to Non-English speakers. So, While introducing new methods or new approaches to teach English as a Second Language we conclude with putting that particular method into practice. So, Here is a glimpse of some classroom activities.
Activity: 1 Vocabulary for Particular Profession
In English there are particular words for a particular profession. To improve our English we can learn those words to enrich our vocabulary. There are two types of Language Learning. First is English for Academic purpose and English for Special Academic purpose. So, In this particular activity a task was given with reference to English for Special Academic Purpose where we have to choose any profession and write ten words related to that profession. So, Here is my Activity...
Objectives of the Activity
- This activity is done in response to an essay which we are studying is by R.S. Sharma "Teaching EST in Indian Conditions."
- We generally notice that students who are learning English as a Second Language are suffering from lack of vocabulary. They lack an exact vocabulary for a particular profession. So, This activity helps them to improve their vocabulary.
- R.S. Sharma also insisting on EST, means 'English for Science and Technology.' So, He also insists on teaching Special vocabulary for special topics and subjects.
- As an outcome we can say this activity helps students to develop their vocabulary in English for particular subjects.
Activity: 2 Sentence Translation
In this activity we have to translate a selected sentences which are given by our Teacher Miss. Vaidehi Hariyani. Sentences are as follows….
Purpose of the Activity
- The very first objective to carry out this activity is to make students aware that Literal Translation does not work every time.
- When we are translating Source Language into target language one should also focus on the Socio-cultural context of the source language.
- When we translate native language into English there might be the possibility of losing its essence.
- Sometimes translation of language can be resulted into Misconception or Misunderstanding of the concept
- Meaningful translation is more adequate then Literal translation of the sentences.
Activity: 3
New Word Introduction
Third activity is about introducing a new word to students. This is my favourite activity which I like the most. In this particular activity we have to play the role of teacher and find some methods and approaches through which we can introduce a new word to students. We have to give at least three ways or methods.
