Thinking Activity - Hamlet and To His Coy Mistress

Marginalization of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern these two Characters are marginalized in Hamlet by Shakespeare. Both characters are pawns and used for personal profit in 'Hamlet.' Both became merely puppets of the hand of Power. What they do for their Kingdom and What is done to them is Oppositional. They became prey to Power Politics. If we see from the perspective of tradition of Shakespeare's time then there is nothing wrong done with them. Because it is a tradition, and no one even bothers to know that What happens to them. They are just sponges or Monkey Food. So Shakespeare Marginalized Powerless in his own Culture, while Tom Stoppard did so but in his own culture and Marginalized all of us. Some hidden force is always controlling, which is beyond our control.

Example

In society or especially in Political fields Marginalization is a continuous process. In different contexts and discourse people are treated as oppressed and Inferior to One another. Women are Inferior to men. Black People are suppressed by White People. Colonialism also formatted a form of Colonizers and Colonized, and White masters exploited Colonizers and also treated slaves. And Time and again when Oppression reached its peak people started raising their voice.

If we see one of the Burning question in India in contemporary situation is the Marginalization of Muslim Community.
India is the Secular country, which allow all the religion Sustain and Spread, then why discrimination of Muslim Community is the core Focus in India.

In current few weeks throughout country we can see violent protest against the new
CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT(CAA) AND NATIONAL REGISTER OF CITIZEN(NRC).

The 2019 CAA amended the Citizenship Act of 1955 allowing Indian citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian religious minorities who fled from the neighboring Muslim majority countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan before December 2014 due to "religious persecution or fear of religious persecution".

The protesters of the Act say why Muslims are excluded from the act. Discrimination with Muslim community is loss of their political rights, culture and land rights. So, This is how minorities are always marginalized and oppressed by the majority of people with Power. While addressing a public gathering in MP leader Digvijaya Singh spoke about the CAA...

"In Indian Constitution, no decision is taken on the basis of religion. Our main objection against CAA is that they (BJP) are trying to divide the communities on the basis of their religions. 'Atithi Devo Bhava' is the culture of India and we welcome all on that basis."

To His Coy Mistress - Implied Culture vs Historical Fact

Implied Culture is all about what Literary Text is showing, that might be reality or even cannot be. So When we study Implied Culture there is also a need to find what is historical fact and realities of that time. Study absence and what is ignored is also as much as valuable as what is showing.

So, When we Study "To His Coy Mistress" is a love poem by Andrew Marvell. Speaker is Knowledgeable about poems and conventions of classic Greek and Roman Poetry, also about the conventions of Love poetry. But What does a poet not Show is the prime question?...

  • Don't think about the poverty of that era.
  • Don't think about widespread diseases of STD in London during the author's time.
  • Don't think about the death of 75,00 people caused by the Great Plague in London.

So, If we study these poems from only one perspective, from the point of view of Love then It might create "One Sided Storz" about London of Marvell's time. So, poems try to show the Implied culture of London but reality is totally different from what is shown in the poem. So, This how Cultural study helps readers to inquire into Historical facts and prevent them from creating one-sided stories.

Example

# Let's take the very famous serial "Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah" different families from different States coming together in one colony and representing their own states. What is the problem with this serial is that it shows only one side of that particular state, which create, single story in readers and the audience 's mind might be dangerous.

For Example is we look at Gada Family, then it shows the image of Gujarati's are always connected with Business, But reality is different we are not Business men at all. And One another image of Dayabhabhi like Gujarati is always used to play Garba at any time. This is what creates the fake identity of Gujarati, So it came under the Implied Culture.

# Let's see One another example of Corporate Culture. First see definition for Corporate Cultural…

"Corporate culture refers to the beliefs and behaviors that determine how a company's employees and management interact and handle outside business transactions."

Corporate culture refers to the shared values, attitudes, standards, and beliefs that characterize members of an organization and define its nature. Corporate culture is rooted in an organization's goals, strategies, structure, and approaches to labor, customers, investors, and the greater community.

From outside it looks like Corporate Culture is the best culture which provides facility and essential need for their employees and also takes care of their workers. But when we loom behind the scenes corporations are working for their own profit and gain. They first look for their own profit and after that comes their employees. So it breaks our implied Illusion that Corporate Culture is better than a Government job. Here is one interesting cartoon which shows how companies use their employees for their own profit and they applied "Use and Throw" strategies...
