This Activity is a part of a Cultural study paper which tries to ponder upon two questions given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir
Frankenphemes in contemporary Indian Culture
In Literary Sourcebook on Frankenstein, Timothy Morton used the term Frankenphemes as "elements of culture that is derived from 'Frankenstein', which is sum up of two different terms…
- Phonemes - Sonic elements of language and used in Structural Linguistics
- Graphemes - Visual Elements
It is all about the universality of work of art and how it is still applicable in the present situation. And Visual element is all about appearing in popular fiction, drama, film and television.
Devdas as Frankenpheme
Devdas is Bengali Romance novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It was completed in 1900 but not published until 1917 because of the hesitance of Chattopadhyay because it also contains some autobiographical elements. He is regarded as Short story Writer and Novelist. Most of his works deal with Lifestyle, tragedy and struggle of Common people or villagers. And highlights of Contemporary social practices also can be noted in his works. He remains the most popular translated, adapted, celebrated author of time. His most celebrated book "Devdas'' was adapted for film around 19 times in different 7 languages like Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Urdu, Assamese, Malayalam.
Sudhir Mishra recreates Devdas against political backdrop, where the protagonist is a puppet in a political drama. The role of Chandramukhi is played by Chitrangada Singh who is a socialite and keeper of dark secrets. And Paro works for a rival political party. As Mishra mentioned that…
"Devdas is just a take-off point, like Westside story, which is directly linked to Romeo and Juliet. I also go into Shakespeare's Hamlet. When Sarat Chandra wrote Devadas in 1901 he must have had Hamlet in his mind."
Tragic hero, falls because of his own instant decision, outcast these are the universal appeals for movies which feel connected towards the hero. He is suffering because of his own sorrow and self-pity. So the question is why this soppy, weak, and failed young hero strikes today's audience and the answer given by Anurag Kashyap…
“It will, because no matter what age, we are melodramatic people. Devdas works especially because it’s a male who is so weak. We are used to brave, virtuous heroes,"
So every generation deals with Devdas with their own spirit of time and values. When Film Historian B.D.Garga, who had written many books on Indian Cinema believed that...When P.C.Barua's film was made, this story of young aristocrat's unhappy love was seen primarily as violent protest against arranged marriage.
Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, one of the first Bengali writers to grow rich on the earnings from his books. His stories remain popular still, in a vastly changed world. After that very noteworthy film version of Devdas which became popular as modern day takes on Devdas…
Adaptations of Devdas are not only from India, there are also Pakistani and Bangladeshi films based on Devdas. DEV DD is a web series, which modern takes reverted the gender and creates a genderbent version on Devdas. So, This how Devdas remain Frankenpheme in Indian Culture which are still adapted for films and television and try to translate it into their time. So Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay remain as Zeitgeist.
