Teaching is a two way communication process, in which Teacher and Learners are two polls, standing at beginning and end of process. And whatever communication happens between these two polls can be known as Teaching outcome for Teacher and Learning outcome for result.
Teaching and Learning is a Formal way of communication. And in a formal atmosphere maintaining some discipline and etiquette became necessary along with having some qualities of being a Teacher and being a learner. Teachers and Learners have different ror to play according to their position.
This particular blog is designed in response to a task given by Miss Vaidehi Hariyani Madame, where we have to ponder upon the role of Teacher and Learners in the Teaching Process.
Before we start, one point should be clear in everyone's mind that the characteristics which I am going to share here are applicable for almost every teacher who is teaching at different levels. Of course there is a necessity of some special qualities at different levels. But now my major concern is to highlight some basic characteristics and roles of every teacher, without going deep into the specific role for teaching at a specific level.
Role of Teacher
When we are defining a teacher one should elaborate more on what role a teacher should play while they are teaching instead of giving the definitions for Good and Bad Teacher.
"It makes more sense to describe different teacher roles and say what they are useful for, rather than make value judgments about their effectiveness."
(Harmer J.)
Good Rapport Building capacity with Students
To make teaching more effective a teacher has the capacity to build a good rapport with their students. Teachers can create an atmosphere where one feels comfortable and grasps every delivered thing effectively and raises their questions anytime. And this will only happen if teachers create a flawsome bridge between students and teachers where students feel free to ask any questions, raise any queries and discuss anything.
“Teachers can play many roles in the course of teaching and this might facilitate learning. Their ability to carry these out effectively will depend to a large extent on the rapport they establish with their students, and of course, on their own level of knowledge and skills.”
(Brown H. Douglas)
Encourage students to do New Things
A teacher's role is not only limited to complete their syllabus and make their students ready for Exams. But a teacher's role transcends beyond Exam and Syllabus where a teacher should always encourage their students to think beyond out of box and come up with new ideas. And it not only ends here in encouragement, but Whenever a student comes with new ideas it becomes the teacher's responsibility to appreciate their efforts and motivate them to come out in the public sphere with their knowledge and unique ideas.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
(Albert Einstein)
Make students Future Ready
"A good teacher isn't someone who gives the answers out to their kids but is understanding of needs and challenges and gives tools to help other people succeed."
Unbiased and Neutral
One of the important roles a teacher should play is to always remain unbiased while thinking about their students. Every student has different capacities and abilities to gain knowledge. So,one cannot judge on a single parameter about the goodness or badness of students. So, It is becoming natural that a Teacher should treat their students equally instead of giving more importance to few and less importance to more.
“A gifted teacher is not only prepared to meet the needs of today’s child, but is also prepared to foresee the hopes and dreams in every child’s future.”
Mind Shaper
“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think”
(Margaret Mead)
After a parents Teacher is one whom children are affected a lot. And the influence of teachers remains throughout life. So, teachers can teach their students from the very beginning to think deeply and critically, because we are living in a Rational World, where everything should be thought elaborately instead of accepting things as it is. Instead of throwing our own opinions on students a teacher should give a free space to their students to come up with their own opinions.
“The true aim of everyone who aspires to be a teacher should be, not to impart his own opinions, but to kindle minds.” (W. Robertson.)
Listener and Have Patience
A Good teacher always listens to their students patiently. He/She always listens to their students' questions eagerly which encourage students to ask more and more questions and also try to satisfy their students curiosity by giving appropriate and significant answers.
“The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he can ask his pupils that they will answer readily, but how many questions he inspires them to ask him which he finds it hard to answer” (Alice Wellington Rollins)
Ignite a Spark
This role rather seems an informal one but actually it is not. A teacher should teach their students to think rationally. And also teach them how to question everything instead of accepting as it is. Sometimes what happens is that Teacher doesn't like that their students ask questions to them and they scold them for asking questions. And this may affect students' futures, that in future they will never even think or raise questions. Instead of stopping them one should motivate their students to ask questions especially to those who always remain silent in class.
“The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.”
(S. Lewis)
Role of Learners
Role of Teacher and Learners are both equally important in teaching and learning. Because without learners whom will the teacher teach? So, After knowing some basic roles of a Teacher let's throw some light on the Role of Learners.
Willingness and Reverence for Learning
Having a respect for what we are doing is first and foremost a necessity to complete work successfully. In the same manner a Learner must have their willingness to learn. According to the proverb "Where there is will there is a way." So, If Learners are not willingly learning then they shouldn't have interest in it. And at that time there might be a possibility that Teaching and Learning may fail. So, For a learners first requirement is their willingness and their reverence for learning.
"The fitness of the pupil is shown in his love for the acquisition of knowledge, his willingness to receive instruction, his reverence for learned and virtuous men, his attendance upon the teacher, and his execution of orders."
(Dayananda Saraswati)
Passionate and Attentive
Having passion for whatever we are doing forces us to do things more appropriately. Passion provides energy and power, which excites us to put two steps more deeper in whatever we are doing. So, For learners also have passion for knowing new things helps them to remain attentive in their classroom.
“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”
(Anthony J. D’Angelo)
Flexible and Resilient
To fit yourself in a new environment and be comfortable with people helps students build a good rapport with their colleagues and teachers. Having flexibility helps learners to grasp new things easily.
We are always learning from different people at different places. And every person has their unique style of teaching. So, Flexibility helps learners to set themselves within a new box quickly. And Resilience also means having a quick capacity to get into shape. Learners also have flexibility to unlearn and relearn.
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
(Alvin Toffler)
Determinated and Independent
To have determination is also one of the important skills which a learner should have. Because teachers do not always remain with them like backbone. There comes a time when a learner has to decide, and has to make independent decisions in their life. So, Becoming determined and having independent opinions also helps students to grow fully.
“If you are willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn no one will stop you."
Dedicated and Enthusiastic
Dedication and commitment to our works keeps one entangled and enthusiastic towards whatever they are doing. Full dedication can be turned out into success. So, learners should be dedicated towards their learning. A learners first priority is their learning other than all things come secondary. So, a fully dedicated learner is always passionate and enthusiastic in their learning which also encourages the teacher to remain energetic while he or she is teaching.
Dedication is belief transitioned into action which is transformed into change.
