Pre-Thinking Activity - Pandemic, Poe and Human Psyche

Hello Friends,

“I'm going to kill you" is it a joke or It's a precursor to violence?"

We generally see "I will kill you", "I am gonna kill you" are frequently used phrases in Informal Communication. Now the question is 'Is it really only a joke' which people used to pronounce when they are talking casually or Is it really a path driven phrase towards, violence, brutality or Terror.

Edgar Allan Poe is an American Writer, initiated the genre of Detective Stories and also considered as the Father of English Detective stories. He is famous as a poet as well as a short story writer. Poe used to write Gothic Fiction which are full of Horror, Mystery and Terror. Major themes of his writing are Death, Suspense, Brutal murder driven by silly reasons. Though Psychological studies have not emerged and much more demand during his time, Still reading the depth psychology behind his every character became very interesting.

Guest Lectures are going on in our Department of English MKBU. And This particular blog is designed as a part of pre-thinking activity on Edgar Allan Poe's  given by Dr. Jay Mehta sir, who is with us for three days(18, 19, 20 October) for the discussion of Edgar Allan Poe's selective stories. In this particular blog I am going to share some of the News which are highlighting Murder, Suicide, Depression and Violence.

Edgar Alan Poe's stories have tightly woven plots, where single sentences have their own importance. He believes in the Singular A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it. He strongly believes in creating Singular effect on the reader's mind.

First Impression of these Gruesome Acts

Whenever we came across such unbelievable gruesome acts, there were so many questions that started pop-up in our mind…

  • How people can murder someone brutally?
  • Why are people choosing to commit suicide instead of living life?
  • What will be the possible reasons behind these horrible steps.
  • Are there any psychological defects in the criminal?
  • After committing such a dreadful crime, Either Criminal is guilty or not?
  • What may be the situation which driven criminal to murder person?
  • Which hate factor pervades in Criminal's mind while they are killing someone?
  • After killing someone brutally can the murderer live Normal life?

So these are some of the questions for which we are seeking answers. There are two terms to define Human Behaviour…

  • Humanistic Behaviour
  • Animalistic Behaviour

Humanistic behaviour is such which suits human beings, In which human beings are expected to behave in a kind organized manner. While Animalistic behaviour is totally opposite to Humanistic behaviour which proposed wild and aggressive behaviour of being.

Now the question is why do some people behave in an animalistic way and murdered someone in their anger?

Whenever you read some shocking news of Murders or Killing someone, the first and foremost thought is that How someone can kill a person. From where he/she got that much courage? Or what can be the trigger point which forces a person to kill someone. To know Murderer's mind there are many Psychological Research done. It is generally said that behind such kind of unacceptable behaviour bitter emotional experience is working. Now that particular experience can be of any kind. It can be childhood experience, it can be Social Negligence of a person, continuous rejection by society and also some personal egoistic factors are working behind.

Dr. James Garbarino, a psychologist who works with violent inmates, including many on death row, said that..

“He(Murderer) might be suffering from profound sadness, depression, despair, self-aggrandizement, and narcissism.”

Psychology says Always murderer is not at fault, sometimes situations are such which triggers a person to do such kind of inhuman behaviour. There are some traumatic experiences which they have experienced and as a quick response they kill someone. If we think about Sigmund Freud's theory of Psychoanalysis then we come to know that there are some unconscious desires which are dwelling inside and the person is fully unaware about it. And unconsciously it comes out and leads them to kill a person without any second thought.

To conclude, I would like to throw some light on the upbringing of any children. If we see the history of Killer then we came to know that there was some bitter experience of illtreatment from which a person passed through and because of that they are emotionally damaged. An emotionally damaged person can go to any extent to achieve. their aim. So, to avoid such unexplainable behaviour proper upbringing may help.
