SHITALAA SATAM-RELIGION VS SCIENCE

Introduction

Economy, Society and Social customs, Education, Health, Politics, Physical Environment and Religion...these are the pillars of the Development in the country. Among them religion played a very vital role in thinking and working and in every situation.

In India we can find many different religions. The spiritual land of India had given birth to four main religions…
  • Hinduism
  • Sikhism
  • Buddhism
  • Jainism

These religions together create a subgroup which is known as Eastern Religions. Every religion is known by their religious practices and their beliefs. Every religion has their own festivals, rituals, norms, ethics, life philosophies and many more.

People Are Religious??

Around the world we can find only 16% of people who are not religious. So the question is that why people are religious and why they are believing in this all stupid customs. The construction of the human mind from birth is about what is bad and what is good. There are people who make them aware about the religion and the concept of પાપ્ અને પુણ્ય, good and evil and fear of some dominating power over us.

This is funny but the reality of the world. People believe in the power to which we have never ever mate or even seen. There are some definitions given by scholars…

Karl marx….

Religion is the 'opium
of the people.'

Sigmund Freud

"God was an illusion and
worshippers were reverting to
childhood needs of security
and forgiveness."

So religion played a vital role in shaping human thinking. Every Festivals born from fear. Firstly we can see there is some problem regarding this particular God and Goddesses and then they become a God and people blindly follow that without thinking and questioning it. Some questions which answers can not be found then people start connecting it with God and Divinity.

Shitala-Satam vs Science

The month of August is patriotic as well as religion month. In this month we can find Independance day and month of Kranti and Revolution. On the other side, we can find so many religious festivals like...Month of Shravan (for worship of lord shiva), Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, pateti, Bakri-eid, Molakat-Gauri vrat, Divaso etc..

Shitla satam is a hindu festival in which people eat cold food which was cooked a day before and not allowed to cook new and hot food on the day. Believed that Shitala Mata (Goddess Sheetla) became angry and took your child away.

There is one story behind the festival that...years ago there is a terrible disease called shitala, and there is no medicine for it so people became restless from the death of this illness and they started to worship this devi named shitala and in the whole year at least one day they eat cold food.

Questions raised when one scholar found inoculation and vaccination for this disease which we called smallpox. Now people raised questions about why we eat cold food on that particular day.

There one more science behind eating cold food is to overcome the deficiency of B12. But at that time there is no practice to eat cold food to overcome the deficiency of B12. People do this in the influence of fear of Devi Shitalaa. But after that there is one research paper done by great scientist Homi K. Bhabha that shitalaa is the festival to overcome deficiency of B12.

So, when Edaward Jenner tried to tell the people that he found a vaccination for this illness he became hatred.. because he ultimately tried to tell the people that there is nothing like a goddess shitalaa and she is not going to cure your disease. So this is how science and religion always stand opposite. But we can say that….

"If there is no religion
than there is no Science and
if there is no science
than there is no religion"
