Know the Author - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Once again warm welcome in my Blog. Now,I am coming with very interesting author belongs to Nigeria, Africa named Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie very radical thinker. Task assigned by Dr. Dilip Barad sir as the part of Sunday Reading.

"The most prominent of a procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone author, who is succeeding in  attracting a new generation of readers to African Literature."

Adichie is Novelist short-story writer and Non-fiction writer. Her way to highlight the contemporary social issues in a very creative and interesting way is unique, best known for her incredible works like….

  • Purple Hibiscus (2003)
Novel sets in Post-colonial Nigeria, suffering from political instability and economic crisis. Also focused on themes like Domestic violence, Religion, family relations and Nature.

  • Half of a Yellow Sun (2006)
The book focused on the Biafran War also known as Nigerian Civil war fought between 1967 to 1970. She said…

"The need to write about it came from growing up in its shadow. This thing that I didn't quite understand was my legacy. It hovered over everything"

  • Americanah
It is a novel published in 2013 based on his personal experience. And won the 2013 National Book Critic Circle Award. The story about the Nigerian woman who immigrated to the U.S. for higher education.

  • We should All be Feminist (2014)
It is book length essay by Adichie. It aims to give a definition of Feminism for the 21 century.

Adichie whose father is a professor and mother is in the service of administration. She started reading at the age of 4 and and at 7 she started writing in fragments and short-story on the basis of what she read in British and American short story. So how impressionistic we are, what we read or heard considered it as the real or truth or try to portray it in our work of art. So Adichie is the best example of it.

The Danger of the Single story

This very first video remind us of the story of Pecola, character of Toni Morrison's novel whose strong desire to get blue eyes. Because the single story she learns from very birth is that People with fair skin and blue eyes are beautiful and happy. In a same way Adichie's migration  to the United States where she first time became conscious about her skin colour. She said…

"Race is such a strange construct, because you have to learn what it means to be black in America. So you have to learn that Watermelon is supposed to be offensive."

"The Danger of a Single Story" is really dangerous and terrible for a person to know only single story about culture, people, country, things, places etc. Most of the people have a single point of view for such things and they considered it as true and highest. So the possibility of misunderstanding grow from the single story. Adichie give very interesting examples from her own life..Like during childhood she has single story for British-American literature. Then she had a single story for Fide's family and at U.S
her roommate had.a single story for African people. Her roommate became shocked by the English speech of Adichie because American people think that no one can stand near to their position. Adichie said that how we are treated from childhood to see things only from single visions while there multidimensional way to see the real world. These things are deeply carved on our mind too use only one perspective to look at the world.

One more thing which I like about Adichie is that she considered everything as positive like she tell that from childhood she had deep influence of American British literature. So, she is not degraded it but says it taught me to how to imagine and how to write but what Chinua Achebe's book is that it teaches me that the Character like chocolate skin people also can exist in literature. So how she looks every situation in a very light way. So what the core idea of the video is to look at everything from different perspectives which broaden your sense of understanding.

We Should All be Feminist

The word Feminist mean….

"A person who believes in social political and economical equality of the sexes."

The root of Gender Biased is very very deep and it is very hard to wash it away. Because the mentality of people is deeply involved with it and they believed that What is happening is obvious. But not at all, who is the victim of it know, how differently men and women are treated. Man paid more than women, hotel waiter only greets man, male is only fit for the class monitor, And Ofcourse man must have masculinity. Marriage is also seen from men point of view and it is ownership for man rather than partnership.

Adichie said that we all are feminist. Men and women both have creative, innovative and intellectual mind so we can't say that women are less than men. Both girl and boy should be raised equally and taught the same lessons because the seeds  of masculinity and faminine are Girl are raised differently. A very nice idea(for women) presented by Adichie that…

"You can have ambitions,
      but not too much
You may have aim to be successful
But not to be successful
Otherwise you would threaten the man.

If one had ability and interest than gender doesn't matter. If it is our culture than culture doesn't make people but people make culture and every tradition changes with the passing of time. And for a change we must raise a voice against it and then and we can survive and make our position.Chimamanda gives the definition for feminist which is….

"A feminist is a man or woman who says, yes there is a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it and we must do better."

Talk on Importance of Truth in Post-truth era

We are living in the world of 21st century. Post-modern era in which people are highly sophisticated and love to do Showoff and also putting down their moral values. So, Chimamanda said that telling lies is telling lies to yourself. Making betrayal with self. To get peace, to live happily, to sleep calmly say truth to self as well people also. For that one should be courageous enough to resist and to protest. She said…

" Be courageous enough to accept your life as messy, your life is not always perfectly matching to your ideology."

To do something unforgettable or valuable there is need of Self Doubt and Self Belief.  Without Self doubt you become complacent and without self belief you cannot succeed. There is a very nice reference poem by Mary Oliver is also given which…

Whoever you are
No matter how lonely
The world offers itself to your imagination.

So, to be true to self and faithful to self is more important in the world of post-truth era.

"Whenever you wake-up
That is your morning, what matters is you wake up.

So, It is very interesting to know about Chimamanda African author with voice of Marginalized people. Presenting very new and fresh thought about feminism and importance of truth in post-truth era.
